Hello from VenRod. My favorite thinking spot is a window seat at the Ole Ole Bar in Zurich, watching the street and filling notebooks with "questions for later." Cats, it turns out, have the same hobby. A window perch or hammock gives them a front-row seat, and that small upgrade can change a whole afternoon.
Types of Perches and Hammocks
- Suction cup window hammocks attach directly to the glass, often with a fabric sling.
- Sill-mounted shelves clamp or screw onto the windowsill for a sturdier platform.
- Radiator and chair hammocks hang from a radiator or furniture frame.
- Freestanding perches and cat trees placed beside a window.
- Cushioned or heated-style beds designed to sit on a ledge.
What They Are Good For
Perches turn a narrow sill into a comfortable lookout, give indoor cats something to watch, and offer a sunny nap spot. They also create vertical space, which matters a lot in smaller homes with more than one pet.
Why Cats Love Them
Cats are natural observers. Birds, leaves, people and passing cars are a kind of entertainment that keeps the mind busy. Height feels safe because cats like to watch from above, and a warm patch of sunlight is a classic cat comfort. Many cats will happily claim a perch as their personal office.
How to Choose
- Weight rating: check the stated maximum load and choose one that clearly suits your cat, especially for larger breeds or two cats sharing.
- Mounting: suction cups need smooth, clean glass; sill models need a sill of the right depth.
- Size: your cat should be able to stretch out or curl up without hanging off the edge.
- Materials: sturdy frames, firm stitching and washable or removable covers.
- Window type: make sure the window will stay closed or securely screened while the perch is in use.
Care and Safety Tips
- Test the mount with your hand before your cat jumps on, and recheck suction cups regularly.
- Clean the glass and cups when you reattach them to keep the grip strong.
- Wash covers often, since cats shed most where they nap most.
- Keep blind cords and loose strings out of reach, and avoid spots that get too hot in direct sun.
My notebook entry for today: "What exactly is that cat thinking about the pigeon?" I may never get the answer, but I know a good perch keeps the conversation going. Give your cat a window and you give it a world. Warmly, VenRod.
