Written by VenRod, interview editor of the Klitty CrewCatnip and catnip toys: what they are and why cats love them
Hello, VenRod here. Catnip was at the top of my notebook of questions for later. So, true to my rule "study first, ask later," I read up, sat at the Ole Ole Bar in Zurich, and sorted it all out for you.
What is catnip?
Catnip is a plant from the mint family. Its leaves and flowers contain a natural scent compound that many cats react to strongly. You will find it in several forms:
- Dried catnip: loose leaves and buds to sprinkle on toys, scratchers or beds.
- Catnip toys: plush mice, pillows, kickers and balls filled or refillable with catnip.
- Catnip sprays: a way to refresh old toys or make a new scratcher more inviting.
- Live plants and seeds: grow your own on a balcony or windowsill.
- Alternatives: some toys use silvervine or valerian, which some cats enjoy too.
Why cats love it
When a cat sniffs catnip, it can trigger a short burst of playful behavior: rolling, rubbing, purring, zooming around or licking the toy. Some cats get mellow instead. The effect usually fades after a few minutes, and many cats need a break before they react again. Not every cat responds, and young kittens often show little interest. That is completely normal.
What catnip is good for
- Making new toys, beds or scratching posts more attractive.
- Encouraging lazy or bored indoor cats to play.
- Adding a little fun to a quiet afternoon.
How to choose
- Freshness: look for catnip with a strong scent; buds and leaves are usually preferred over stems.
- Refillable toys: toys with a pouch or Velcro opening let you add fresh catnip later.
- Toy build: strong seams and safe fabric, sized so your cat cannot swallow it.
- Your cat's style: kickers for wrestlers, small mice for chasers.
Care and safety tips
Store dried catnip in an airtight container away from light so it keeps its aroma. Offer it as an occasional treat rather than all day, which helps keep it special. If a cat eats a lot of loose catnip, it may get an upset stomach, so use small amounts. Replace torn toys before the filling spills out. If your cat has a health condition or you notice anything unusual, ask your vet.
A pinch of green, a lot of fun. That's my catnip report. VenRod
