Why Klitty and not Kitty? The story of our name

How the Klitty Crew got its name: a favourite song, a tiny typo in a domain order form – and why we never fixed it. With comments from the whole crew.

Zurich – 24 October 2026, 6:30. Early coffee, the black notebook open on an old page with a coffee ring on it. People ask us this every week, so here it is, once and for all: why Klitty and not Kitty?

A favourite song and an order form

It was the evening we wanted to give the crew a home on the internet. Laptop on the table, the domain registrar open, a cup of tea going cold. And on the record player, a little louder than usual, my favourite song of all time: Hildegard Knef – "Für mich soll's rote Rosen regnen". The song about wishing for more from life than the plan allows. I can't hear it without singing along.

So there I was, typing our name into the order box and singing at the same time – loudly, and not very well. Kitty Crew. Simple. Clear. Done. I pressed the button, the confirmation came, the music kept going. Only the next morning, with a quieter head and a clearer eye, did I read the email properly: klittycrew.com. With an L. Somewhere between two lines of the chorus, my finger had slipped one key to the left.

The moment we could have fixed it

I sat at the Dada Kaffee with that email and the black notebook, and for a minute I was ready to fix it. Order the "right" domain, forget the wrong one. I even wrote it down: *correct the name*. Then I said it out loud. Klitty Crew. And I said it again. It sounded different from what we had planned. It sounded like us.

I crossed out the note. That's the only crossed-out line on that page.

What the crew says

"I studied the typo before I accepted it. That's my rule. Result: a K, an L and a small accident are a stronger beginning than most plans I've read." – VenRod
"Honestly? Best mistake ever. My garden-chair K finally got a friend. And every time someone asks 'why the L?', we get to tell this story. That's how you meet people." – Kinky
"In the hospital you learn that not every surprise is a problem. Some are just a different way to the same place. This one even had a beautiful soundtrack – you can hear it on CatJuxe." – PoshX
"On the farm by Lake Baikal, the best paths were never the ones we planned. They were the ones the animals walked first. Our name walked first. We just followed." – SinDee

Let it happen

I'm the one in this crew who loves plans. Grids, lists, dates, "a bit to the left". So believe me when I say this: some of the best things don't come from the plan. They come from the slip between two lines of a song. If we had held on to the fixed idea of "Kitty", we would have a correct name. Instead, we have our own.

Today the L is on our stickers, our caps, our T-shirts and on every wall we sign. It's the little mark that says: here, things are allowed to go a bit differently.

So if something on your order form, your wall or your day comes out different from the plan – read it twice before you correct it. Maybe it's your name.

A crew is a plan that more than one cat believes in. Ours started with a typo. – DeeNice
