Zurich – 22 October 2026, 15:07. Between two shifts, sewing gold stars onto a blue robe, my tablet propped up with a pattern on the screen.

Why a wizard?

At the hospital I fix things with plasters and patience. For one night I wanted to fix things with a wand. The robe is deep blue with little stars and a KC on the chest, the hat is red like my beanie, and the wand has a golden star I cut out of an old paint tin.

The round glasses

They are not part of the costume, they are part of me. But with the hat they finally look like they belong to a wizard. My mother in Berlin saw a photo and said I look like my father when he told stories in Havana. Best compliment of the week.

The safety spell

Somebody has to think about it, so here is my list for the party: costumes that let you see where you walk, no open candles near capes (VenRod, I'm looking at you), water between the sweets, and a first-aid kit hidden under the snack table. Magic is better when everybody gets home safe.

What the wand can do

So far: point at the last cookie, point at the music when it's too loud, and turn Kinky's soup into a party snack. It works every time if you say "please" first.

Bring a little magic home

The wizard T-shirt, the poster and the sticker are waiting in my fan shop.

A real wizard checks everyone's helmet twice. Or hat. Same thing.
