Zurich – 30 October 2026, 10:10. Ole Ole Bar, the quiet hour before lunch, a cold coffee, a pocket recorder on the table and the cape folded on the chair next to me like a sleeping bat.
Three questions, no more
I wrote seventeen questions on Monday. By Wednesday there were nine. This morning there are three, and they are the same three I promised a week ago: What are you? Why? And what scares you? A good interview is like a good sketch. You keep the lines that carry weight and you rub out the rest, even the clever ones. Especially the clever ones.
The recorder
It is small, grey and older than some of our readers. I bought it second-hand in 2018, the year I started editing interviews for the crew, and it has never failed me. Still, last night I changed the batteries, recorded myself reading a bus timetable and played it back twice. Study first, ask later – and test the machine before you trust it.
The rules
I wrote them on a card that will live in my waistcoat pocket:
1. Short. One minute per costume. The party is the main act, not me. 2. Kind. No trick questions. Nobody should feel caught. 3. No spoilers. Nothing about the guest votes, and nothing about the answers until I have written them up properly. 4. Away from the speakers. The jukebox wins every argument about volume.
DeeNice read the card and added a fifth rule in the black notebook: "Stop when the clock says 0:15." I have accepted it. One does not negotiate with the founder.
Who goes first
DeeNice first, because she founded all of this and the white witch deserves the first question. Then Kinky, before the pumpkin hat gets too warm. Then SinDee, while the glow is still bright. Then PoshX, if no plaster is needed somewhere. And then one guest – whoever wears the costume that surprises me most. I have no idea who that will be. That is the point.
Homework for tonight
I will practise the questions in front of the mirror, in the cape, with the bow tie. If the mirror looks nervous, I will make them shorter. You can read about how I work on my CV page.
A question asked kindly at midnight is worth three asked loudly at noon.
