PoshX packs the party first-aid kit and paints a sky on a pumpkin

Zurich – 28 October 2026, 10:20. Home from the night shift, still in my hospital socks, kitchen table covered in plasters, and a small round pumpkin waiting next to the kettle.

What goes in the box

The kit is an old red toolbox that used to belong to my father. Today it got a fresh label with a white cross and a little star. Inside: plasters in three sizes (and a few with cartoon cats, because adults deserve them too), cooling pads for tired feet, blister patches for anyone in new boots, safety pins for capes that come loose, tissues, a small torch, and a card with the address of the nearest night pharmacy. Everything sorted into zip bags so I can find it in the dark without looking. Night shifts teach you that.

The water station

Point five on my list, and the one people forget most: water. Next to the snack table there will be a big jug, a stack of cups and a sign that says Drink one, dance one. Kinky offered to letter it. I accepted before she could add glitter. Then I accepted the glitter too.

A sky the size of a pumpkin

Before sleeping I needed something that was not about safety. So I painted the little pumpkin. No face, no grin: just a sky, the way Turner might have done one if he had been given a vegetable instead of a canvas. A burning orange low down, a smudge of gold, then a soft grey that disappears around the back. The ribs of the pumpkin made the light bend in strange stripes, which I loved. It looks like a sunset seen through a window with old glass.

Tired, but ready

I counted everything twice, closed the lid and put the box by the door so I cannot forget it on Saturday. The pumpkin will sit next to it, as a small reminder that we look after each other so we can enjoy the beautiful things. Now: shower, curtains, six hours of sleep. My next shift does not care that I am a wizard on Saturday.

A good party has music, light and a plaster nobody needs.
