VenRod's midnight interviews – what scares a costume?

VenRod writes up his midnight interviews from the KC Halloween party: five costumes, three questions each, and what really scares the crew and one surprise guest.

Zurich – 1 November 2026, 19:05. Ole Ole Bar again, headphones on, the recorder playing back last night at half volume while the cape dries on a coat hook at home.

How it went

Five interviews, one minute each, three questions: What are you? Why? What scares you? I started at midnight and stopped at 0:14, one minute before DeeNice's rule. Below are the answers, shortened only where the music was louder than the cat.

The crew

DeeNice, the white witch. Why? "Because a witch can bring good luck too." What scares her? "A plan that only one cat believes in." She said it without looking up from the notebook.

Kinky, the jack-o'-lantern. Why? "Because DeeNice drew a circle with my name under it." What scares her? A K that wobbles until it looks like a garden chair. Then she laughed so hard the pumpkin hat slipped.

SinDee, the glowing skeleton. Why? "Nobody tells a skeleton what to say." What scares her? Forgetting a colour from home – the exact blue of the ice on the lake in March. She was quiet for a moment after that one. So was I.

PoshX, the wizard. Why? "For one night I wanted to fix things with a wand." What scares her? "Somebody walking home alone." Then she checked that I had a partner for the way home. I did.

The surprise guest

The costume that surprised me most was a regular from the Dada Kaffee, dressed as a boombox: a silver cardboard box, two paper-plate speakers, a pink sticker on the right one. What are you? "Your jukebox." Why? "Because it's been in my head all week." What scares him? "Dead batteries in the middle of a good song." Fair. I share that fear.

What I learned

Nobody was scared of ghosts or vampires. Everybody was scared of losing something small that matters: a colour, a friend on the way home, a plan, a song. I think that is why we dress up. For one night the scary things are made of cardboard and glow paint, and we laugh at them together.

Study first, ask later – and at midnight, listen longest.
