Abstract in the Tunnels – Studying Futura 2000

In New York VenRod and DeeNice study Futura 2000, the writer who took graffiti into abstraction, at an exhibition of his paintings and prints.

New York – 20 April 2024, 20:30. A bar on the Lower East Side, DeeNice's notebook full of circles and dots.

Beyond the letter

This study was DeeNice's wish. Futura 2000 – Leonard McGurr, born in New York in 1955 – painted subway cars in the 1970s and became known for something unusual on the trains: abstraction. Instead of classic letters, soft lines, atoms and spaces that look like they are floating. In 1981 he famously painted live on stage during The Clash's concerts, and later his work moved into galleries, prints and design.

We visited an exhibition with his paintings today. After a week of studying wild letters, it felt like stepping into outer space.

How it went

DeeNice was happy all evening. She says the crew should paint one abstract wall one day, just to see what happens. Kinky will hate it, SinDee will love it, PoshX will bring Turner into it. Questions for later: How did abstraction feel on a train full of letters? What does a dot mean to you? What did painting on stage teach you?

Sometimes the bravest thing on a wall is leaving the letter behind. – DeeNice
