A School Wants Colour on Its Schoolyard Wall

The Klitty Crew meets at the Dada Kaffee in Zurich to start a school project with pupils in Oerlikon and to review the first Klitty Skyline sketches.

Dada Kaffee, Zurich – 20 March 2024, 18:30. Early, because PoshX starts a night shift at ten. She brought a thermos and the sharpest pencil at the table.

The school

A teacher came to the Oerlikon drawing afternoon with her mother and stayed for two hours. Last week she wrote to us. Her school has a grey wall in the yard and a class of pupils who want it to stop being grey.

We said yes. The school project runs from April to May: three visits to the classroom, sketches by the pupils, then one painting day in the yard with the whole class. Their ideas, our ladders. The school and the parents have agreed. Nothing is painted without them.

SinDee leads the colour lessons. Kinky does letters, starting, inevitably, with the garden chair. PoshX plans the painting day so that every child holds a brush at least once. I talk to the teacher and keep the dates.

Skyline, first draft

The four zone sketches lay side by side for the first time. Kinky's streets are loud. SinDee's sky is calm. PoshX's centre ties them together with a bridge full of cats. My grid survived, mostly.

It is too much. Good. Better to cut than to stretch. Next month we cut.

Small note

SinDee asked for one more neighbours' afternoon in Oerlikon in April. Granted before she finished the sentence.

"Children don't need permission to dream. Walls do." – SinDee
