Twenty-Two Brushes and One Schoolyard Wall

The Klitty Crew meets at the Dada Kaffee in Zurich after painting a schoolyard wall in Oerlikon with pupils, and prepares the Klitty Skyline start.

Dada Kaffee, Zurich – 16 May 2024, 20:00. My boots still had yellow on the toes. I decided it suits them.

The painting day

Last Saturday the schoolyard wall in Oerlikon stopped being grey. The pupils had chosen everything themselves: a sun with a face, a river, a forest with too many animals, and yes, the pizza with wings, flying over all of it. In the corner, very small, a garden chair. They voted for it. Kinky pretended to be embarrassed for the whole afternoon.

Every child held a brush. PoshX made sure of it, with a list and a whistle. Parents brought bread and fruit. The teacher cried a little at the end and said it was the paint fumes. We used rollers and water-based paint. It was not the fumes.

What we learned

Twenty-two pupils paint faster than four cats. They also argue less. DeeNice wants a page in the notebook titled "lessons from the schoolyard". So far it says: trust the pizza.

Skyline countdown

Three weeks until the Klitty Skyline starts. Paint is ordered, scaffolding is booked for the first ten days of June, the owner has the final sketch. We meet once more before we start, on the wall itself if needed.

I will paint the sky from the top of the scaffold. Up there it will be like standing on the hill above the lake at home. Wind, space, colour.

"Kids paint what they love. We should try that more often." – Kinky
