Postcards Instead of Parties: Our Winter Plan

Dada Kaffee, Zurich – 15 October 2020, 19:30. Too cold for the terrace tonight, so we sat inside, at our regular table in the back, windows open, chairs apart. It felt like visiting an old friend. The table had not changed. We had, a little.

The bird wall

The garden wall at the community centre in Oerlikon is finished. SinDee's mountain birds run along it in a long row, each one a little different. The kids painted the fence posts in every colour they could find. One of them painted a post in the exact pink of SinDee's beanie, on purpose.

And yes: there is one bird with a guitar. It is very small. It is at the far end. Kinky painted it when DeeNice was holding the ladder for me. DeeNice saw it, sighed, and let it stay.

Winter thinking

At work, everyone is preparing for a harder winter. I said it plainly to the crew: I think we should plan quietly, not big. Nobody argued.

Decision: a postcard swap for the winter. Every two weeks each of us draws a postcard and posts it to one of the others. By spring we will all have a small stack of each other's sketches. Kinky wants to send hers to the kids from the chalk sessions too. DeeNice agreed, as long as Mira hands them out.

Also: if meetings move back to video, we keep them. Same day, same time, same spirit.

I played The Cure quietly on my phone. Kinky did not even ask for AC/DC. I will remember that.
