Blankets on the Terrace and Birds for Oerlikon

Dada Kaffee (terrace), Zurich – 22 September 2020, 19:00. The evenings are getting cooler. The café put blankets on the chairs. Kinky took two. I wore my green puffer jacket and did not need one. Farm cats do not get cold until November.

The mountains

This summer I did not fly anywhere. I walked. Ten days in the Swiss mountains, from hut to hut, with a small sketchbook and too many apples. I drew marmots, clouds, a very proud goat and one lake that reminded me of home.

I passed the sketchbook around. PoshX found a page of birds sitting on a fence and said, "This is a wall." DeeNice wrote something in the notebook. I knew what that meant.

A small wall

Mira from the community centre in Oerlikon called DeeNice last week. Next to the centre's garden there is a low wall, maybe knee height to a tall cat, long and grey. The kids play there every day. Could we paint something on it?

Decision: we paint a row of mountain birds on that garden wall in early October, from my sketchbook. Small, quiet, outside, two painters at a time. The kids from the centre can paint the fence posts between the birds. Mira will bring tea.

It fits the year, I think. Not a giant wall. A small, kind one.

Kinky asked if there could be one bird with a guitar. DeeNice said no. Then she wrote "maybe" in the notebook, in very small letters.
