Back on the Dada Kaffee Terrace, Two Metres Apart

Dada Kaffee (terrace), Zurich – 18 June 2020, 19:30. Real chairs. Real coffee in real cups. Four cats on the terrace, sitting a little further apart than usual and grinning a little wider than usual. Our table in the back stays empty for now, but we waved at it through the window.

Seeing each other

Kinky hugged the air in my direction. SinDee had walked all the way from Wiedikon and looked pleased with herself. PoshX came straight from work and ordered the biggest coffee on the menu. Nobody talked about plans for the first ten minutes. We just talked.

Then I opened the notebook. Some things never change, and that is a comfort.

The thank-you wall has a home

The owner of the small wall in Kreis 4, near the tram stop, said yes. More than yes. His sister is a carer, and he wants to help prime the wall himself.

PoshX showed the final sketch on paper: the row of cats in scrubs and aprons, wild flowers above, and "Thank you. We see you." in Kinky's letters. SinDee added a few birds in the corner, small enough that you have to look for them.

Decision: we paint the thank-you wall in the first week of July. Two painters at a time, shifts of three hours, masks on, our own brushes and cans. PoshX gets the faces, Kinky the letters, SinDee the flowers. I bring the ladder, the water and the schedule.

We stayed until the terrace lights came on. Nobody wanted to go home first.
