Our Usual Table in Spirit: The First Video Call

Dada Kaffee (by video call), Zurich – 19 March 2020, 20:00. Four small squares on a screen, four cups of coffee made at home, and one empty table in the back of the Dada Kaffee that we all pictured anyway. Our usual table, in spirit.

The hard decision

There was not much to discuss, and it still took an hour. The pandemic has reached Zurich. Everyone is asked to stay home. PoshX joined from her kitchen, tired, between two long shifts at the hospital. When she talks about work now, the rest of us just listen.

Decision: the Zürich West wall is postponed. No date yet. I called the warehouse owner this afternoon. He said the wall will wait for us. Walls are patient. We will be too.

The summer jam is off the table for now. Kinky was quiet about it. That is rare, and it told me how much she minded.

What we can still do

Then SinDee had an idea. "We cannot go to walls. But we all have windows."

So that is the plan. Each of us paints our own window with window colours, something cheerful for whoever walks past. A cat waving. A bird. A sun. Small, safe, from home.

Kinky is already sketching. PoshX said she will paint hers on her day off, if she has one. I told her she does not have to. She said she wants to. That is PoshX.

We meet again next month, same screen, same spirit. I kept the notebook open on my desk the whole time. Some habits help.
