How to Teach a Nine-Year-Old to Draw a Winking Cat

Dada Kaffee, Zurich – 22 August 2018, 19:00.

Hot evening, iced tea, and a table covered in big sheets of paper. For once I was early, since I had a day off. I used the time to draw a very serious timetable that the others ignored within five minutes.

The meeting with the youth club

Kinky did it again. Her contact runs a small neighbourhood youth club, and last week the three of us met there. She was kind, practical and asked good questions. We agreed on one Saturday morning in September, twelve kids, two hours. "You two should know each other," Kinky said afterwards. She was right.

The plan

Two hours is not much, so we keep it simple. First, everyone draws a cat face from three shapes. Then letters: each kid designs their own initial, with a crew member next to them. At the end, everyone puts their cat and their letter together on one long paper strip, a small mural made by many paws. That part is my favourite. Teamwork works at any age.

SinDee will bring paper, markers and crayons, nothing that stains clothes. DeeNice will stay in the background with the notebook and a box of plasters, just in case.

The garden chair question

Kinky asked if she could teach her K. We said yes, but only as an example of what can happen if you rush. She called it "a valuable lesson in style". The children will decide.
