Packing List for Berlin: Sketchbooks, Scarves and Bowie

Dada Kaffee, Zurich – 13 February 2019, 18:45. I came straight from an early shift, still smelling a little of hand disinfectant, and found the others already sharing a plate of vegetable dumplings. They had saved me the last one. That is friendship.

The route

I spread a hand-drawn map of Berlin across the table. Not the tourist version, my version: the courtyard where I sketched my first letters, the long walls by the river, the little gallery corner where I fell in love with Mode 2's characters in an old book. Four days, lots of walking, no rushing.

SinDee asked if there would be trees. There will be trees. Kinky asked if there would be falafel. There will be a lot of falafel.

The playlist problem

Then came the real debate. I proposed Bowie for the train, because Bowie and Berlin belong together. The Cure for the evenings. Kinky nodded politely and then added three AC/DC songs to the start of the list. SinDee added a fourth. DeeNice wrote "AC/DC wins again" in the notebook without looking up.

Decisions

We leave on the first Thursday in March and come back on Sunday. Everyone brings one sketchbook only, which Kinky has already broken by packing two. Each of us will draw one Berlin wall per day and we will compare them at the March meeting.

My shifts are swapped. My suitcase is open. My heart is already halfway there.
