A New Notebook and a Wall Called "Open Again"

Dada Kaffee, Zurich – 19 January 2021, 19:30. Snow on the windowsill, steam on the glass and four cats squeezed around the table in the back. Quiet room, big mugs, careful distance.

Page one I opened a new black notebook tonight. The first page has only two words on it: Open Again. Last year we painted windows, stuck "Stay home, stay wild" on every lamppost we were allowed to and said thank you to the nurses with a whole wall. This year we want to paint the feeling of doors swinging open.

Nobody knows yet when that will be. That is fine. Sketches don't need a date.

Who draws what Kinky wants a giant cat stretching out of a doorway, claws first. SinDee suggested a sky the colour of Baikal ice cracking in spring. PoshX, between two night shifts, asked for space where many hands can paint at once. "One wall, four styles, no boss," she said. I wrote that down twice.

The decision: everyone brings three sketches to the February meeting. No polishing, no excuses. We pin them on the wall at home and look at them for a week before choosing.

Small comforts Kinky asked if the vegetable soup was vegetarian before she even took off her beanie. It was. The playlist argument was short – AC/DC won, as usual, because nobody had the energy to fight.

"We're not waiting for permission to dream. Only for permission to paint." – DeeNice
