Dada Kaffee (by video call), Zurich – 17 December 2020, 19:00. Four squares, four candles, four envelopes that arrived by post this week and had not been opened. The December sticker swap, at a distance. Some traditions adapt. They do not stop.
The swap
We opened the envelopes on camera, one by one. Kinky made a tiny SinDee walking up a mountain with a pink beanie as a flag on top. SinDee made PoshX with wings, holding a stethoscope. PoshX made me at my desk, with the notebook and a coffee and the words "a bit to the left" through a screen.
I made a window with four cats painted on it. That was our year. Kinky went quiet. Then she said, "No garden chair this time?" I told her it was in the post separately.
Looking back
A strange year. We planned our biggest wall and never painted it. Instead we painted windows, drew with chalk, posted stickers in letters and painted a thank-you to the people who carried this city. The bird wall in Oerlikon. The postcards. Small things. Good things.
Looking forward
Kinky asked about the quiet page in my notebook. I did not tell her. Not yet.
Plan: in January I open that new notebook, at our real table if we can, on screen if we must. Our first big wall after all this will start on page one. Until then: postcards, Wednesday sketch evenings and a lot of patience.
PoshX said, "Whatever it is, it should feel like a door swinging open." I smiled and said nothing. She was very close.
