DeeNice and the silver boombox that became CatJuxe

DeeNice tells the story of the silver 80s boombox from Saturday's flea market, the pink KC sticker on the right speaker and how it became CatJuxe online.

Zurich – 28 October 2026, 18:45. Sitting on the floor of my flat, the black notebook on my knee, and a silver boombox in front of me, humming quietly the way only old machines hum.

Saturday, early

I go to the Saturday flea market for buttons and old maps. I never buy anything big. That was the rule until last Saturday. Between a box of teaspoons and a lamp shaped like a swan, there it was: silver, heavy, two big speakers, a cassette door that opens with a soft clunk. A real 80s ghettoblaster. The seller asked if I wanted it tested. I said no. Some things you just know.

The test at home

It works. Both speakers, the radio, the tape deck. The VU needles still dance. I put in an old cassette I had kept for years without a machine to play it, and the first song was the one I had hoped for. I will not tell you which. I sat there for the whole side A.

The sticker

The right speaker had a small scratch. So I did what this crew does with scratches: I put a sticker on it. A pink KC sticker, a bit to the left of the scratch, because that is where it looked right. Now it is not an old boombox anymore. It is ours.

From the floor to the website

On Sunday I showed it to the crew. VenRod had already spent Saturday evening asking everybody for their favourite songs and writing the lists in neat columns. Kinky took photos from every side. A few days later the boombox was living a second life online: silver body, pink sticker on the right speaker, a pink KC mixtape that spins, needles that move with the music. Every one of us has a playlist on it. Mine starts with Knef, of course. You can listen at the CatJuxe.

Its next job

On Saturday the real one moves to the counter of the Dada Kaffee for our Halloween night. I already wrote it in the notebook, page five, the one I left empty for surprises.

The best things at a flea market are the ones you were not looking for.
