Dada Kaffee, Zurich – 22 August 2024, 19:45. Hot evening, open windows, and a tower of sketchbooks on our table so tall the waiter asked if we were moving in.
The tower
Kinky brought every sketchbook she owns. The first ones still smell of the Bronx, she says. Train sketches, crowded kitchen tables, eight family members drawn on a single page because there was no room for more. Then Zurich, Stockholm, Barcelona, Lisbon, the scaffold.
The exhibition cannot show everything. Tonight we started choosing. It was the hardest editing job since we cut the skyline with scissors.
The rules we agreed
- Each book stays whole. Visitors turn the pages themselves. - Thirty books on tables, no more. - One table for the crew: SinDee's Siberia, PoshX's Berlin school sketches, my notebook. Closed. Only the cover. - The original garden-chair K gets its own table, under a glass bowl. Kinky protested. She lost.
The room
The archive boxes from last winter helped more than anyone expected. Kinky finally stopped calling them the pile.
And we have a room: a friendly space in Kreis 4, borrowed for one Saturday evening in mid-October. Long tables, warm light, a wall for one big sketch made live on the night.
Next steps
PoshX plans the lighting. SinDee designs a small invitation card. Kinky picks the music, and has promised a playlist that is not only AC/DC. I have written that promise down. Dated. Signed.
