Painting Autumn Light Like Turner on a Wall in Wiedikon

October at the Dada Kaffee in Zurich: halfway through the autumn wall in Wiedikon, the crew talks colours, Turner, Monet and a rainy-day backup plan.

Dada Kaffee, Zurich – 10 October 2018, 18:45.

I came straight from a day shift with paint still under my nails from the weekend. The others teased me that I now smell of disinfectant and acrylic at the same time. Fair.

Halfway there

The first painting weekend in Wiedikon went well. The background is done: a sky that fades from gold to deep red, with soft brushstrokes I stole, very respectfully, from Turner. SinDee started the outlines of the characters, a family of cats sitting under a big tree with falling leaves. The owners bring us tea every two hours and their dog supervises everything.

The colour debate

Not everyone agreed on the leaves. I wanted them loose and blurry, like Monet's gardens. SinDee wanted them sharp, with clear pink edges. Kinky suggested both, and for once that was a good compromise: blurry leaves in the background, sharp ones falling in front. DeeNice wrote "both" in the notebook and underlined it. Discussion closed.

The rain plan

The forecast for the second weekend looks wet. If it rains, we move to the Sunday after and spend Saturday here at the back table, sketching the final details. Kinky already promised the letters will be finished then, with a K that "absolutely does not look like furniture".
