Before I interview any member of the Klitty Crew, I study their sleeping habits. It is my rule: study first, ask later. And nothing tells you more about a cat than where it chooses to doze. So let's talk about cat beds and blankets, and how to pick one your cat will actually use.
Types of Cat Beds and Blankets
- Donut and bolster beds: round, raised edges that a cat can curl into and lean against.
- Cave and hooded beds: enclosed shapes for cats that like to hide while they rest.
- Flat mats and pads: simple cushions for crates, sofas or sunny floors.
- Window perches and hammocks: raised spots for watching birds between naps.
- Self-warming blankets: layered fabrics that reflect your cat's own body heat back to them.
- Throws and fleece blankets: easy to move, easy to wash, and great for marking a favorite chair as "theirs."
Why Cats Love a Good Bed
Cats spend a large part of their day resting, and they are picky about it. They look for places that feel safe, warm and familiar. Raised edges let them press their back against something, which helps them relax. Enclosed beds mimic the sheltered nooks a cat would seek out on its own. Soft blankets also hold their scent, and a spot that smells like home is a spot a cat returns to.
How to Choose
Watch how your cat sleeps. A cat that curls into a tight ball tends to like bolster or donut beds. A cat that stretches out flat may prefer a large mat. A cat that disappears under the duvet is asking for a cave.
Check size. The bed should fit your cat comfortably in its favorite position, without being so big that it loses that cozy, hugged feeling.
Look at materials. Removable, machine-washable covers make life much easier. Sturdy stitching matters for cats that knead. For older cats, a lower entry and firmer cushioning can make getting in and out more comfortable.
Think about safety. Avoid loose threads, small decorative parts and long fringes that could be chewed or swallowed. If you consider a heated bed, choose one designed for pets and follow the manufacturer's instructions closely.
Care and Safety Tips
- Wash covers and blankets regularly, and shake out fur between washes.
- Use a mild, unscented detergent so the bed still smells like your cat.
- Place the bed somewhere quiet and draft-free, away from busy doorways.
- Replace beds that are torn or have flattened stuffing.
- If your cat suddenly changes how or where it sleeps, ask your vet.
From VenRod, writing this one at the Ole Ole Bar: a good bed is the first interview a cat gives you. Read it well, and your cat will tell you everything else in its own time.
