Written by VenRod, interview editor of the Klitty CrewCat trees and condos: what they are and why cats love them
VenRod here. When I interview a cat, I like to meet them where they feel most at home, and very often that is high up. So I studied cat trees first and saved my questions for later, as usual, over a coffee at the Ole Ole Bar.
Types of cat trees and condos
- Tall cat trees: multiple levels with platforms, perches and scratching posts.
- Cat condos: enclosed cubbies or "houses" for hiding and napping, often built into a tree.
- Compact towers: smaller units for apartments or kittens.
- Wall-mounted shelves and steps: climbing routes that save floor space.
- Window perches: lookouts that attach near a window.
- Floor-to-ceiling poles: tension-mounted trees for maximum height in small spaces.
Why cats love them
Cats like vertical space. Being up high lets them watch the room, feel safe and keep an eye on "their" territory. Enclosed condos satisfy the instinct to hide and rest in a cozy, protected spot. Many trees also include scratching surfaces, which help cats stretch, keep claws in shape and leave scent marks. In homes with several cats, extra levels can help everyone find their own space.
How to choose a cat tree
- Stability first: a wide, heavy base matters more than height. A wobbly tree may scare a cat away.
- Size of your cat: large cats need big platforms, roomy condos and thick posts.
- Materials: sisal-wrapped posts for scratching, sturdy wood or board, and soft but durable covering.
- Age: kittens and senior cats do better with lower steps and easy-to-reach levels.
- Placement: near a window or in the main living area is usually more popular than a hidden corner.
Care and safety tips
Check screws and bolts regularly and tighten anything loose. Vacuum platforms and condos to remove fur, and spot-clean fabric. Replace worn sisal or rewrap posts when they get frayed. If a tree is tall, consider anchoring it to the wall. Dangling toys are fun, but remove them if they start to come apart. If an older cat stops jumping as usual, ask your vet and add easier steps.
My favorite question for later: "Why does my cat sleep on the top platform even when the cozy condo is free?" Because the view is the luxury. Give your cat a safe place up high, and you will see a happier, more confident cat.
See you on the top shelf. VenRod
