One of my oldest "questions for later" was this: why does a cat ignore its water bowl and then drink from a dripping kitchen tap? I took that question to the Ole Ole Bar and to many Klitty Crew members. The answer led me straight to water fountains.
Types of Cat Water Fountains
- Flower or bubbler fountains: water gently rises and spills over the top.
- Stream or faucet-style fountains: a small flowing stream, ideal for tap-loving cats.
- Waterfall or ramp fountains: water flows down a slope into a basin.
- Stainless steel fountains: durable and easy to clean.
- Ceramic fountains: heavy and stable, often with a decorative look.
- Plastic fountains: lightweight and usually budget-friendly.
- Wireless or battery fountains: flexible placement without a cord nearby.
Why Cats Love Moving Water
Many cats seem naturally drawn to moving water. The sound and motion catch their attention, and flowing water often seems fresher to them than water that's been sitting still. Some cats also like to paw at the stream or watch it before drinking. A fountain can make drinking more interesting, which is helpful for cats that don't seem to drink much from a regular bowl.
How to Choose
Flow style: watch how your cat drinks now. Tap fans often prefer a stream, while cautious cats may like a calm, gentle bubble.
Capacity: a larger reservoir needs refilling less often, which helps in multi-cat homes. A smaller one is easier to clean and refresh.
Noise: a quiet pump matters. Some cats avoid fountains that hum or rattle.
Cleaning: choose a design that comes apart easily, with parts you can reach with a brush. Check whether replacement filters are easy to find.
Safety: look for a covered or protected cord, a stable base and a low-voltage or pet-safe design. Keep cables out of chewing range.
Care and Safety Tips
- Refill with fresh water regularly and never let the pump run dry.
- Clean the fountain and pump following the manufacturer's instructions.
- Replace filters as recommended to keep the water fresh.
- Place the fountain away from the litter box and food bowl.
- Keep a regular water bowl available while your cat gets used to the fountain.
- If you notice your cat drinking much more or less than usual, ask your vet.
VenRod's final word: I always say, study first, ask later. With fountains, your cat does the studying. Give it a gentle flow and a clean basin, and it will answer you in sips.
