The Tree Wall Is Finished, Now Swap Your Stickers

Dada Kaffee, Zurich – 12 December 2019, 19:45. Fairy lights in the window, mulled apple juice on the table, and four small envelopes waiting next to my notebook. December means the sticker swap. Some traditions are not up for discussion.

The tree wall

Last Saturday we finished the wall at the community centre in Oerlikon. Two weekends, a lot of help. Neighbours painted leaves. Kittens painted suns, mostly on the wall and partly on themselves. The choir sang while we worked, which slowed PoshX down because she kept singing along.

The tree now runs the whole length of the hall, with everyone's ideas hanging from its branches. The volcano is in the corner. Mira says the grandparents now play cards facing the wall instead of the window. That is a big compliment.

The swap

Each of us designs one secret sticker for the others. Kinky drew a tiny Baikal lake with an electric guitar floating in it. SinDee drew PoshX as an opera singer on a ladder. PoshX drew me with the notebook and the words "a bit to the left". Rude. Accurate.

I drew a garden chair. Kinky groaned. Everyone else laughed until the waiter came over.

Looking at 2020

Berlin, "Baikal Blue", Barcelona, the tree wall. A good year. For 2020 we want something bigger: a spring wall, a new sticker series and maybe a summer jam.

Plan: in January everyone brings one big idea for 2020. Just one. I will choose. Gently.
