Dada Kaffee, Zurich – 20 November 2019, 18:30. Early meeting tonight, because PoshX starts a night shift at ten. She brought her uniform in a bag and a box of drawings under her arm. So did the rest of us. The table disappeared under paper.
The sketch night
Last Saturday the hall in Oerlikon was full. Kittens, grandparents, the choir, a few teenagers pretending not to be interested and then drawing the most of anyone. Mira made tea. Kinky made friends. SinDee sat on the floor with the smallest kids and handed out the biggest sheets.
We came home with more drawings than I could count. Trees, suns, a bus with wings, a grandmother cat playing cards with a fish, a lot of rainbows and one very detailed volcano.
Making one wall out of many
Tonight we sorted. Not by "good" or "bad", but by what kept coming back. Trees came back a lot. So did music, food and the sun. The volcano came back only once, but everyone loved it, so it stays.
PoshX sketched a first layout: a long tree whose branches run the length of the wall, with the neighbours' ideas hanging from it like fruit. The choir sits in the roots. The volcano sits in the corner, smoking politely.
Decision: we paint the community-centre wall over two weekends in early December. Neighbours can help on the Saturday mornings. Mira gets the final sketch next week to show the centre.
I closed the notebook. PoshX ran for her tram. Kinky ordered more snacks, for the drawings.
