VenRod asks every cat for a song – notes for CatJuxe

VenRod researches CatJuxe: three questions for every cat in the crew, his own list from Beat Bop to Madredeus, and why a jukebox is more than a playlist.

Zurich – 24 October 2026, 18:07. Ole Ole Bar, my usual stool, a ginger tea going cold next to a notebook page titled Songs – questions for later.

Study first, play later

A jukebox needs lists, and lists need research. So this week I asked every cat the same three questions: Which song do you never skip? Which one would you play for a friend on a bad day? And which one is secretly embarrassing? Nobody answered the third one. That tells you something too.

What the crew told me

Kinky gave me eleven songs in under a minute, all of them sunny, and sang the chorus of "Walking on Sunshine" while I wrote. SinDee thought for two days and came back with songs about helping each other, "Lean on Me" near the top. PoshX handed me a folded note and said, "My late-night list. Don't read it out loud." I didn't. DeeNice gave me one title and said the rest would follow when she was sure. It was Hildegard Knef. Of course it was.

My own list, explained

Mine is a bit of an archive. "Beat Bop" by Rammellzee and K-Rob, because it sounds like two voices that never planned to agree. The 45 King, because a good loop is like a good question: every time you hear it, it goes a little deeper. Madredeus, for rainy afternoons with old books. The duet from The Magic Flute, because most things improve as a duet. The Cure, "Friday I'm in Love" – yes, also on Mondays. And Fela Kuti, James Brown and Bob Marley for the moment when thinking should stop and dancing should start.

Why a jukebox and not just a playlist

A playlist is a list. A jukebox is a place. You walk up to it, you choose, somebody else hears your choice and smiles or rolls their eyes. That is a small interview without questions. The lists are filling up on the CatJuxe: five cats, five lists, one mixtape that spins.

A detail for later

This morning DeeNice came back from the Saturday flea market with something silver under her arm and a pink sticker in her paw. She asked me not to write about it yet. I am a polite cat. I am only noting it.

Every song is an answer. The trick is to find out what the question was.
