Seventeen Is Finished, and Kinky Writes From New York

Back at the Dada Kaffee in Zurich after finishing Seventeen, our first big mural in Zürich West, while daily sketches arrive from Kinky in New York.

Dada Kaffee, Zurich – 18 April 2018, 19:00.

Only three of us tonight, with an empty chair that SinDee had decorated with Kinky's spare beanie. It looked surprisingly convincing from a distance.

The wall is done

Last Sunday evening, PoshX put the final orange stroke into the sky and Seventeen was finished. Two weekends, one primer layer, one ladder named Bernhard and far too many sandwiches. The clock shows 17:17, the cats climb the numbers, the lake shines at the bottom. The owner brought his whole family to look at it. One of his children asked which cat was the boss. SinDee pointed at me. I pretended not to notice.

Letters from far away

Kinky has sent a sketch every single day from New York, as promised. Rooftops, fire escapes, a bagel with a face. Yesterday she sent one of a Bronx yard where she used to paint, with a tiny KC badge drawn on the fence. She writes that her family apartment is still crowded, still loud and still the best place on earth after Zurich.

What next

I wrote three words under the Seventeen page: summer street jam. A day when we paint with other local painters on a legal wall and anyone can watch. SinDee will lead the planning, because she knows how to talk to owners. PoshX will draw up a simple schedule around her shifts. Kinky returns in early May, so the real planning starts then.

A finished wall is a promise kept. – DeeNice
