PoshX, the extra hour and a sunrise run by the lake

The clocks went back: after a night shift PoshX runs along Lake Zurich at sunrise, sketches the sky and plans warm LED lighting for the KC Halloween party.

Zurich – 25 October 2026, 9:15. A bench by the lake, running shoes still wet, my sketchbook on my knees and a sky that changed its mind six times in an hour.

A present from the clocks

Last night the clocks went back. On a night shift that means one extra hour on the ward, which is a strange gift – the corridor gets longer, the coffee gets weaker, and every patient asks what time it really is. But when I came out at the end, the city was still dark and I had an hour that didn't belong to anybody yet. So I put on my shoes and ran.

Running into the light

From Bellevue along the lake towards Tiefenbrunnen, slowly, because after a night awake slow is the only speed. The water was black, then grey, then a pale steel colour. The swans were still asleep with their heads tucked in. A rowing team went past, eight backs moving like one, and I thought: that's a crew.

The sky sketch

At the turning point I stopped and drew fast, pencil first and then a little watercolour from the tiny tin I keep in my jacket. Turner would have made a storm out of it. Monet would have waited and painted it nine times. I had twelve minutes before my fingers got too cold, so I made one sky: a band of peach over the hills, a lilac cloud with a gold edge, and the lake catching all of it a little late.

Party light, planned like a shift

Watching the sun come up, I made a list for the 31st. No candles – that's settled. LED tea lights in jars on every table, warm white, never cold blue. A string of warm lights along the bar, dimmed after midnight. One brighter lamp by the door and the stairs, because costumes and steps are not friends. And nothing flashing: some of our guests come to dance, some come to sit, and both should be able to see each other's faces.

Now, sleep

My eyes are closing on this bench. Home, shower, curtains. The sky is drying on the radiator, and the extra hour is already spent – on the best things.

The best light is the one that helps everyone find the way home.
