Forty Kittens Invented Their Own Crews

October 2021 at the Dada Kaffee in Zurich – the crew looks back on the Wiedikon kids' workshop and plans a small autumn wall for the drawings.

Dada Kaffee, Zurich – 13 October 2021, 20:00. I still have glitter in my beanie from Saturday. I've given up. It lives there now.

The workshop "Draw your own crew" was chaos in the best way. Kittens invented crews with names like "The Sock Thieves" and "Thunder Paws". One little grey cat drew four characters who all looked like SinDee, sunglasses included. SinDee pretended not to be moved. She was.

PoshX showed the Monet water lilies and explained soft edges. A tiny tabby said: "So it's allowed to be blurry?" Yes. That might be the best thing anyone learned all year.

What to do with all those drawings We came home with a pile of paper crews. DeeNice said it would be a crime to put them in a drawer. Then she said the thing we didn't expect: "Let's paint them."

Decision: a small autumn wall in Wiedikon, next to the community room, with the owner's permission (he loved the kids' drawings). We pick eight characters from the workshop and paint them big, with the kittens' names written beside them. Early November, one Saturday, before it gets too cold.

My job I told DeeNice I'd paint the lettering. She looked at me and said, "Not like your first K." Everyone laughed. My first K looked like a broken garden chair. It's been four years. They will never let it go.

"The best ideas in this crew were drawn by someone under ten." – Kinky
