Two Weeks After Kinky's Sketchbook Evening

At the Dada Kaffee in Zurich the Klitty Crew looks back on Kinky's sketchbook evening exhibition in Kreis 4 and decides what happens to the live wall.

Dada Kaffee, Zurich – 30 October 2024, 19:30. Clocks have gone back, so it was dark by the time I arrived. Kinky was already there, still glowing two weeks later.

The evening

Kinky's sketchbook evening happened, in a borrowed room in Kreis 4. Thirty sketchbooks on long tables. People turning pages slowly, the way you read a letter. Some sat for an hour with a single book.

The Bronx books drew a crowd. So did SinDee's birches. The garden-chair K under its glass bowl drew the biggest crowd of all, which Kinky pretends to resent and secretly framed in her memory forever.

I did the lights. Warm, low, one lamp per table. As a nurse I know what good light does to tired faces. It did that.

The live wall

All four of us drew on the long sheet during the evening. DeeNice too, from behind a wall of visitors. By the end it was full: towers, cats, a bridge, a pizza with wings drawn by a pupil from the Oerlikon class who came with his mum, and forty or so little lines from strangers.

We decided tonight: the sheet goes into the archive, box eight. But first we photograph it, and next spring we want to turn it into a painted wall, with the same rule: anyone may add one line.

What Kinky said

She stood up at the end of the evening, which she never does, and said thank you to "the cats who made me keep drawing". Then she put on AC/DC. Of course.

"I met so many people you should know. All of them, actually." – Kinky
