SinDee meets Marta the baker – and a back wall says yes

SinDee visits a small family bakery in Kreis 4, drinks a coffee with Marta, talks honestly about colour and winter – and wins a wall for a mural.

Zurich – 5 November 2026, 17:55. Kreis 4, a narrow courtyard behind a bakery, my hands around a warm paper cup, flour on the sleeve of my green jacket that is definitely not mine.

The wall first

I always look at the wall before I knock. This one is old plaster, a little grey, a little tired, with a drainpipe on the right and a window where the steam comes out in the mornings. Around four metres wide. It gets the low winter sun after two o'clock. It is the kind of wall that has been waiting quietly for years and stopped expecting anyone.

Then the baker

Marta runs the bakery with her family. She came out with flour up to the elbows and asked, very directly, if I was the cat who wanted to paint on her house. I said yes. She said: "Then come in and have a coffee, because I don't say yes to strangers." I like people who say it straight. We sat between the bread shelves and the oven, and she gave me a piece of the plaited loaf that was "not pretty enough to sell". It was perfect.

The honest part

She asked what it would cost her. Nothing, I said, only the wall. She asked what happens if she hates it. Then we talk, I said, and we change it. She asked if it would be "one of those loud ones". I showed her my notes from the Uetliberg on Tuesday: the blue of fog in the morning, frost on fallen leaves, the pale gold on the roofs. Quiet colours. Winter colours. She looked at them for a long time and said they looked like the city at six in the morning, when she opens the shop. That was the moment.

A yes, with one condition

She said yes. Her condition: one small loaf of bread hidden somewhere in the mural, for her children to find. Easy. I promised. PoshX will do the sky, DeeNice will draw the grid, and I will bring the blues.

Walking home

I took the tram past the river and could not stop smiling at my reflection. A wall is never just a wall. It is someone letting you in.

Ask honestly, listen longer, and bring the bread back as a painting.
