DeeNice draws the grid for the bakery wall in Kreis 4

Measuring tape, chalk and the black notebook: DeeNice plans the winter mural on the bakery wall in Kreis 4, decides who paints what and sets a date.

Zurich – 7 November 2026, 16:45. The courtyard behind Marta's bakery, the light already going, chalk dust on my sunglasses and the black notebook open on the bin lid, which today is my desk.

Measuring first

Four metres twenty wide, two metres eighty high, a drainpipe on the right that we will not paint over and a window that steams up every morning. SinDee held the tape, VenRod read the numbers out loud and wrote them down twice, because he trusts nothing he has only written once. Kinky made sure nobody stood on the cat-shaped shadow of the drainpipe. That is not a rule. She just likes it.

The grid

I draw the grid in the notebook first, then in chalk on the wall. Squares of forty centimetres, numbered from the bottom left. PoshX brought her sky sketch from this morning, mist below and gold above, and we laid it over the grid. It was almost right. I stood back, looked for a long time and said, "A bit to the left." Everybody sighed. Everybody moved. It was better. The gold now opens exactly above the window, where the steam rises.

Who paints what

PoshX: the sky, top two rows, from blue fog into warm light. SinDee: the bottom, frost on fallen leaves in her winter blues, and one small loaf of bread hidden among them, as promised to Marta. Kinky: one cat on the edge of the roofline, looking at the sunrise, and the lettering, small and steady. Very steady. VenRod: photographs every stage for the archive and talks to Marta's customers who stop and ask. Me: the grid, the lines, the last look.

A date

First coat on Saturday, 14 November, starting at nine, if the weather stays above five degrees. PoshX made us all promise. Marta promised coffee. Her children promised not to look for the bread until it's finished. I believe two of those promises.

A quiet moment

When the others left, I stayed a few minutes with the chalk lines. An empty grid is my favourite moment of every wall: everything is still possible, and nothing is wrong yet.

A wall is a plan that a whole street will believe in. Love, DeeNice.
