DeeNice, the black notebook and the rules for the 31st

Monday with DeeNice and the black notebook: the guest list, the rules for the KC Halloween party, doors at 21:17 and why her playlist starts with Knef.

26 October 2026 · 08:30 · DeeNice

Zurich – 26 October 2026, 8:30. Dada Kaffee, first customer of the week, an espresso, the black notebook open on the page that says 31 – now with a lot more writing on it.

Monday is for lists

Weekends are for walls and flea markets. Mondays are for the notebook. This morning I copied everything from the scraps of paper in my bag onto the right pages, in pencil, so that I can still change my mind.

The guest list

The crew, of course. Then the friends of the crew, which is longer. The wall owners who said yes to us over the years, because a party is a good way to say thank you. Neighbours from the street. The café team, who will be working, so they get a prize of their own in my heart. I counted twice and stopped at the number the room can hold without anyone standing on a tail.

The rules

Doors at 21:17. Some of you know why. No candles, not one – LED tea lights only. PoshX has written this on three different lists, and she is right three times. Water on every table, between the sweets. A quiet corner at the back, with cushions, soft light and no speaker pointing at it, for anyone who needs five minutes away from the noise. A costume is welcome, kindness is required. And at midnight VenRod does his interviews; if you don't want to be asked, just say so. He is very polite about it.

Why my playlist starts with Knef

Kinky's list makes you jump. SinDee's makes you hold hands. Mine is for the moment when you look around a room and realise you are safe. The first song is Hildegard Knef, "Für mich soll's rote Rosen regnen". I heard it in a kitchen a long time ago, sung along by someone who had every reason to be tired and wasn't. It still sounds like a door that stays open. The rest of my list is in the same spirit: songs that were here before us and will be here after us. You can hear them on the CatJuxe, between everyone else's, on shuffle – which is exactly how a crew works.

One more line

At the bottom of the page I wrote: check the corner again on Friday. Then I moved the cushions a bit to the left, in my head.

A good party is a plan where everybody can find a chair.
